The governmental, cultural, and economic heart of Portugal, Lisbon is the westernmost capital of Europe. On the River Tagus, or Rio Tejo to locals, and with a modest population of a few more than 500,000 persons, visitors will find that Lisbon MICE venues may span many centuries. Lisbon was already an established city in the days when Julius Caesar ruled almost all of what was known of the world, and it was under Moorish rule between the 8th and 12th centuries. The city began to flourish when the Medieval Portuguese explorers of Henry the Navigator, Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan discovered the world and brought back its riches.
Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) is the city’s international airport, also known by its Portuguese name of Aeroporto da Portela de Sacavem. It has flights all around Europe and the world, to North America via Air Transat (to Toronto), United Airlines (Newark, NJ), and TAP Portugal (also Newark), for which the airport serves as its hub. There also are seasonal flights direct to North America, too. The airport sits within Lisbon itself, only four miles from the center. Lisbon also has a subway system, which has four lines and a main hub in the station of Baixa-Chiado; as well as a network of trams and funiculars.
Chief among MICE venues, Lisbon Congress Center, or Centro de Congressos de Lisboa, has eight auditoriums, five exhibit halls, 27 meeting rooms, and more than 170,000 square feet of function space. In total, it can host up to 8,000 persons. Lisbon MICE hotels include the 577-room Lisbon Marriott, which has space to host up to 400 persons; (400); the 518-room Corinthia Lisbon (with its largest space able to host 1,400 persons); the 369-room Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa (largest space for 610 persons); and the 331-room InterContinental Lisbon (560). And there are many more Lisbon MICE hotels to choose from.
