Staying True to Your Personal Mission Statement

Picture this: It’s the end of a long and tiring workday and the moment you step outside the building to go home, you’re welcomed by a downpour of freezing rain and gusty winds. Perfect!

You can see your nice warm and dry car parked right across the street, but you have no way of reaching it without getting drenched. Then, out of nowhere, one of your coworkers appears carrying an umbrella and they offer to share it.

The rain is pounding down now but the umbrella shields you from the worst of it as your coworker escorts you to your car. Naturally, you feel indebted to them for their random act of kindness but there is a much more profound lesson to be learned from all of this.

They are some disturbing things happening in the world right now, making a little rain seem almost laughable. People are sick, starving, and angry at each other in a world that grows crueler by the day.

This negativity often makes its way into our lives through the media or even just the way we talk to each other on the street. Just like the rain in the story above, it seems unavoidable when in fact, you can create your own umbrella with a personal mission statement.

What is a Personal Mission Statement?

A personal mission statement acts as a self-affirming creed that you live by. This can include showing kindness no matter what situation you find yourself in or striving to make a difference in your community every day. A personal mission statement can be short and to the point or a synopsis of the life you wish to live. Typically, personal missionn statements are uplifting, highlight important milestones expected of the future, and reflect your true desires as a person. Think of it as endeavoring to be the change you hope to see in the world around you.

How Do I Discover My Personal Mission Statement?

The answer to this is simple: Imagine your ideal self and try to look beyond trivial things like vanity and cynicism. Do you strive to live life to the fullest, or does finding joy in the simple things in life inspire you? Your personal mission statement helps you clarify your competencies. Besides driving our self-determination, they also demonstrate who we are to others. The purpose of a personal mission statement is to inspire you to treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.

How Can a Personal Mission Statement Help Me?

Can you recall a time you went to a café or to get your car serviced, and the behavior of the employees did not match the company mission statement? It can be embarrassing for companies to have bad people representing them. When you see someone with a negative attitude, they may have lost sight of their personal mission statement. Being in tune with your personal mission statement creates a sense of peace in your everyday life because you exhibit satisfaction in your daily choices.

Whether you regularly contribute to your community by volunteering or feel empowered to perform random acts of kindness without hesitation, your personal mission statement will guide you to an enlightened and peaceful state of mind. As a result of your devotion, your centeredness may serve as an umbrella for someone else facing the storm.
